It’s hard to grasp the magnitude of the firestorm that consumed nearly 1,100 homes and businesses and impacted even more thousands of lives the week after Christmas in the Boulder County communities of Superior and Louisville. Hurricane force winds whipped what began as a small grass fire into the costliest wildfire in Colorado history.

One life (and likely at least one more) was lost in the inferno. Thousands of people were left homeless as structures were destroyed, damaged, or left temporarily uninhabitable. Pets and livestock were scattered; many didn’t survive or ended up in shelters with no home to return to. In all, estimates are that over half a billion dollars of damage was done.

But, as with most tragedies, relief agencies, governments, and most importantly, ordinary people stepped up to come to the aid of fire victims. And as time goes on, many more will be helping with the monumental task of cleaning up and rebuilding those communities.
