Denver Int’l Airport Wins Environmental Award
By Mike McClanahan / October 24, 2022

Denver International Airport (DEN) was awarded the 2022 Leading Airport Fleet

award this past summer by ACT Expo in recognition of the airport’s alternative and sustainable fleet assets. The award recognizes airport fleets that demonstrate leadership in alternative fuel and advanced vehicle technology.

“As DEN strives to become one of the greenest airports in the world, it is imperative that every aspect of our operation makes sustainability a top-priority,” DEN CEO Phil Washington commented. “Our maintenance team is dedicated to doing their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while balancing operation capability.”

800-Plus Vehicle Fleet Spans All Sizes, Functions, Fuels

DEN has more than 800 on- and off-road vehicle and equipment including everything from low-speed vehicles (LSV) and pickups/SUVs to Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) and unique runway snow removal equipment.

As of summer 2022, 25% of DEN’s fleet was powered by low- or zero-emissions fuels, including:

  • 98 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles
  • 88 all-electric vehicles
  • 17 hybrid fuel vehicles
  • 2 propane-powered vehicles.

Plans for 2022 include adding eight more electric vehicles and mini-sweepers to the fleet and increasing charging capacity for future EV growth.

O.J. Watson is Part of the DEN Team

With 33 miles of runways and taxiways, 23 football fields of parking and an 11-mile freeway connecting it to the surrounding metro area, there’s a lot of ground at DEN to keep clean and free of snow and ice.

O.J. Watson Equipment is proud to be the supplier of much of Denver International’s operations and maintenance fleet. We design central hydraulic systems that operate in conjunction with the latest, most sophisticated snow and ice removal equipment to operate snowblowers, plows, sanders, deicers, and snow disposal vehicles.

Heavy-duty truck bodies with Oshkosh® dual-engine blowers can throw as much as 5,000 tons of snow an hour up to 200 feet, making them the ultimate solution to airport snow removal. The blowers are synched to the truck wheels to allow the drivers to concentrate on the path ahead, adding a large measure of safety to hazardous operating conditions.

All-electric vehicles from pickups and vans to Heidelberg’s new Schmidt eSwingo 200+™ sweeper point to an even more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly future for DEN and thousands of other public and private enterprises.

Sweepers, steel and poly plows, under-body or wing scrapers—we are here to work with you to build the trucks that you need to keep airports, parking lots, and roadways safe and clear.
