BREAKING NEWS ON PLOWING
March 11, 2021

Denver news meteorologists forecast a record setting Snowmageddon this upcoming March weekend. One model shows the potential for up to 40” of snow in the metro area. CBS Local predicts the snowstorm could be the biggest in 9 years. Even southeastern Colorado, where temps average 59.9 ° F is predicted to see 2 ft. of the white stuff.

The snowplows tasked with removing the spring dump (or snow any time during winter) can do damage to turf, driveway, sidewalk…even the mailbox. Then there’s potential damage to the irrigation system sprinkler heads tucked inside the curb. And don’t forget the landscape lighting that has become so popular.

Spring snowstorms are by their nature heavy and destructive. The weight of freezing rain and snow accumulation adds unbearable weight to power lines and tree limbs. Roofs collapse. As the snow melts, flooding adds calamity to hazard.

When you’re in the snowplowing biz, you know that damage goes both ways: Break a concrete curb with your plow and you’re likely to damage your plow in the process.

Time to contact OJ Watson.

We are known for building exceptional custom work trucks of every sort including snowplows. Plows can be complex creatures with the wide variety of customization options available. For example, the BOSS V-snowplow is a multi-position plow that lets you quickly and easily choose from a variety of blade positions including a scoop, straight, angle or v-position and anything in between. Pros will tell you that a typical snowplow lasts 7-10 years, but it all comes down to how well you maintain the plow as much as how hard you use the equipment.

Take a tip from the pros this coming weekend: When plowing deep snow, raise the plow several inches off the ground to shear of the top layer of snow on the first pass. Then change to the scoop or angle position to widen out the area. Push just enough snow with each pass to be effective and efficient without overloading your equipment. Rule of thumb: use a full blade width for 2” of snow or less, 3/4ths of the blade for 4” of snow and 1/2 a blade for 6” or more.

Be prepared for emergencies: extra hydraulic fluid, hydraulic hoses, a pump solenoid, extra cutting-edge bolts, and a trip spring.

If you’re in the market for a customized plow, OJ Watson is your resource. And no matter what the issue is with the workhorse snowplow you operate, OJ Watson will get you back up and plowing without delay.
